Summary/Abstract: Michael W. Jennings discusses Michael Schmidt’s photoessay from 1996 as a sort of visual archeology of 20th-century German history; Schmidt’s work is juxtaposed with August Sander’s famous Face of Our Time from 1929, a panorama of German society during the Weimar Republic, as its end-of-century pendant. At the same time, Jennings argues that Schmidt’s essay – in which, significantly, text is present exclusively in the photographs themselves – tries to read the traces of history from the faces of his sitters and Berlin’s built environment, from mundane objects and various documents that he photographs on the same level as if he were photographing “reality” itself.
