Summary/Abstract: The author digs deep into the complicated and fascinating relationship of science and medicine which since the 19th century has been wedded to the technical possibilities of photography. He provides an analysis of Iconographie photographique de la Salpêtrière by Jean-Martin Charcot to show not only the link between the camera’s mechanism and scientific faith in the possibility of incontestable knowledge, but also the fact that these photographs reveal a structural similarity between traumatic hysteria and photography, since it is the flash that links pathology and technology and teaches us something about the origins of photography and psychoanalysis.
