Summary/Abstract: Walenty Skorochód Majewski (1764–1835) was a self-educated archivist, scientist, and the author of the first Polish grammars of Sanskrit and Turkish. He was interested in the history of the Slavs and other nations and devoted most of his life to propagating Indian culture, Sanskrit in particular, in Poland. Although his efforts met with the distrust and frequent criticism of the scholarly community, he did not lose heart and went on to publish further works. Taking into account that he tried to introduce his countrymen to completely unfamiliar languages, he deserves the title of the first propagator of the two oriental languages in Poland.
