Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the importance of knowledge intensity of services for flexibility of the employees’ competence management. By analyzing the theoretical determinants of specificity of functioning of the service sector, this paper focuses on the internal differences by indicating the special role of the employees’ competences to knowledgeintensive service companies. Studies conducted on a representative sample of 941 large and medium-sized enterprises in Poland show marked differences in the approach to the employees’ competence management in industry, knowledge-intensive services, and less knowledgeintensive services. Knowledge-intensive service companies are characterized by relatively greater flexibility in the competence-based management of employees expressed by common understanding of the value of human capital and employee competence and the impact of employee competence (or of competence gap) on the competitive edge and business performance. This is followed by the practical implementation of the components of competency-based human resources management system in these enterprises.
