Summary/Abstract: Because living conditions in the built environment are evidently deteriorating the international community has formulated special guidelines for the development of cities and other settlements (Istanbul declaration, Agenda Habitat). They were prepared according to principles of sustainable development. In these guidelines future sustainable management of the built environment is directed towards rehabilitation of the present condition. These guidelines are integrated in Slovenian normative and evaluation documents. However, since these documents, especially the normative ones, are not mutually coherent and do not have necessary back-up in development plans, guidelines, by-laws, models and different stimulation or restrictions, contemporary planning of the built environment, doesn’t manifest itself in our space. On the contrary, multi-layered deterioration of our cultural landscape continues relentlessly.
