Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on the genesis of the subjectivist positioning of the man in the world. The genesis in question finds itself in the context of two processes occurring in the history of the West-European mentality – rationalization and individualization. The periods of the late scholasticism and the Renaissance are being analyzed as being crucial, in a theoretical sense, for these processes to deploy in a synthesis. The synthesis itself, which has been reflected in the formula cogito ergo sum, a symbol of Modernity, seems to be the initial point of another process – that of the construction of an absolute in format, both subjectivist and individualistic position of the man towards his surroundings.
