On the Threshold of Baroque. To the Problems of Typology and Style in Moravian Architecture 1620–1650

Summary/Abstract: The text deals with the problem of typology and with the question of an existence of the independent style framing the Moravian architecture of the Thirty Years’ War. It argues against the traditional approach towards the rusticalism and the monumentalism which has often been condemning architecture as an uncreative, a bizarre, and especially as an anachronistic building without any unity of style signs. The text undertakes a research of the provenance of Moravian church domes, the ground plan typology and of the space and mass features. The architecture raising during the years1620–1650 in Moravia is finally characterized by integral central European protobaroque artistic tendencies preparing a new post-war architecture style in the Central Europe.
