Summary/Abstract: The article proposes a pluralistic approach to two of the most significant concepts pertaining to discourse and text structure. It discusses various theories suggested by researchers in fields as varied as narratology, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics and discourse analysis, in the attempt to offer a more systematic and comprehensive idea of the importance of coherence and cohesion to the understanding of narrative discourse.
