Summary/Abstract: One of the final messages that the recently deceased Pope John Paul II issued on the sixtieth anniversary of the liberation Auschwitz, offers solace, understanding and faith that humankind will face up to its awful deeds. In him we have lost a son of the Church who, by means of historic gestures, drew closer to the Jewish people. The fact that he came from Eastern Europe, the scene of the Holocaust, doubtless played a role in this.
