Summary/Abstract: The author uses an understanding of personal diary as a writing practice where record-making is an action of multiple functions, the material dimension contributing to the significance and functions of such action. If an ‘I’ is the text’s subject, then the subject of action/writing is an empirically existing person, as confirmed by the trace left over by this individual not only in the text itself but also, in the diary’s materality. Thus, truth in a diary is of a historic, personal, and written nature (a diary being a series of dated personal traces). The truth of a diary does not only exist on the textual level but is a truth of the life of the individual who is leaving his or her trail in the diary-keeping practice whose essential characteristics is its written and material character (literacy and materiality). Having assumed so, the author discusses three types of diaristic truth, naming them respectively: the truth of events (i.e. historic(al) truth); the truth of experience (i.e. psychological/personal truth); and, the truth of reality (i.e. metaphysical/transcendental truth).
