Summary/Abstract: Depending on the way of reading, the Estonian territory carries 30–45 place names with Abru- as their initial component. Every third of them is a settlement name. In literature the Abru-initial place names have been associated with the personal name Aabraham and its adapted forms. The paper discusses whether the Abro- and Abru-initial names of natural objects could possibly originate in an abr-initial landscape appellative, such as abrikas ‘boggy place’ or abru ‘shelf; reef’.
