Summary/Abstract: Although applied to a work of fiction, this analysis shows that language is frequently used to express (asymmetrical) power relations. Such relations are even more pronounced in formal contexts, where some speakers enjoy a societally assigned power, which, in turn, does not imply that societally subordinated interlocutors do not have the possibility of acquiring the discourse power. This is indeed possible even in highly formalized settings – such as royal courts – recognized for their strict observance of hierarchy in all areas, including language. This leads to a conclusion that there are different types of power and that domination of one of them is primarily influenced by the actual circumstances of a particular verbal interaction.
