Literary Output of Gypsies/the Roma. Research State-of-Play

Summary/Abstract: This study deals with literary production of European Gypsies. The area of action of first collectors of oral folklore of Gypsies is outlined, as is the moment folklorists ‘discovered’ Gypsy poetic output specifying the authors’ names. Profiles of some Gypsy/Roma poets are drawn; described is availability of their literary texts and the moment of birth of our contemporary Roma original poetry identified. A working definition of ‘Gypsy literature’ is moreover proposed.
