Summary/Abstract: Abstract. This text gives insight into a dimension which is significant for understanding the limits and possibilities of the contact and collaboration that took place between German and Yugoslav intellectuals and scholars during the 1990s. The author recollects how contacts between anti-war activists in Germany and Serbia were established, the problems which arose, and the successes that were achieved. Thus, this contribution provides important material and can serve as a source for conceptualizing the research on civil activists in Yugoslavia – a recently opened field. The article demonstrates the interaction between political engagement and scholarly research. A joint scientific project – unique under the conditions of sanctions – was established by scholars from Münster and Belgrade. Above all, this retrospective view casts light on the joint attempts to elaborate the categories and terms which will eventually make it possible to identify and analyze the social factors that led to the war.
