"Seek the peace of the city..." Reflections on Jer 29.

Summary/Abstract: Religion had a considerably stronger influence on the structures of society in Israel and its surroundings than we could imagine. At the time of the Old Testament there did not exist any secular society. The decisive question for Israel was whether to accept or reject the various cultural and religious alternatives. The present study analyses Jeremiah 29 - with special interest in verses 4-7 - for this passage addresses people who landed in a society entirely alien to theirs.
