Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to point to the social and institutional context in which the restructuring and privatisation process of the Public Enterprise Macedonian Railways – Skopje (PE MR) has taken place, and which is still in progress, as well as the readiness and the competence of the social partners to accept and implement the project for the enterprise’s restructuring and privatisation. The article points to the relevance, urgency and justifiability of the problem in all its possible aspects, including information provided to the public and public opinion about it; the real situation of the Macedonian railway system and the need for something to be done in terms of its modernisation and reorganisation; and, indeed, the technical and technological promotion of the same. Certainly, the issue of the rationalisation of the workforce is immediately connected with the reorganisation and privatisation process which has resulted in mass redundancies from work, as well as the social package used to provide economic and social compensation to those who lost their jobs as a result of the economic, technological and structural reforms. This process is also connected with the transparency and acceptability of the procedures used to carry out the scoring system as an objective procedure in order to outline those who were kept on and those who lost their jobs and, of course, the trust between the key actors in this process (government, management and the trade unions).
