Summary/Abstract: The River Danube flows through ten countries, more than any other international navigable waterway. This provides the Danube with vast opportunities for the shipping industry in both transport and tourism. For the same reason, however, the Danube will never carry as much traffic as waterways within one or a small number of countries. The employment impact of recent constraints to navigation is difficult to quantify; however, this article aims to provide an indication. This article has been prepared over a short period and much of it is based upon semi-structured interviews undertaken along the length of the Danube at shipping companies, ports and other organisations over the past five years. Interviews were of a general nature and not specific to this article; however, all included questions on the issue of labour and other relevant semi-structured questions.
