Summary/Abstract: You will leave for Jerusalem the day after tomorrow.” Uri woke up with a start. His father was standing over him. Uri pulled himself up from his ragged bedclothes, picked up the scroll that had slipped from his hand, and while still in a sitting position, looked up apologetically. An embarrassed half-smile appeared on his lips, as always when he was caught, and he was always caught, even when he hadn’t done anything wrong. His father tarried a little longer in the dim alcove. From the courtyard, the grey February afternoon illumined his serious, bearded face, his prominent cheekbones and deep-set eyes; the small square cut into the wall glimmered right above Uri’s tousled, greasy hair. His father stood there looking grave, not casting another glance at him, just staring out the window.
