Summary/Abstract: Although a great many Marxists and students of Marxism are members of the various intellectual professions, especially those concerned with higher education, comparatively little has been written by way of an internal analysis of those professions from a Marxist-oriented point of view. Marx himself wrote a great deal about the function of ideology, the ideological orientation of the German professors of philosophy of his time, and the role of bourgeois political economists in upholding the bourgeois social order. But he wrote nothing systematic about the place of educators within the existing class structure, just as he wrote little that was both systematic and comprehensive about class divisions themselves.
