Summary/Abstract: For the past few years I have been greatly interested in education both in its philosophical and practical dimensions. Let me be more direct about that. The past five or six years have been difficult and confusing times for me - as for most educators. Like many others, a good part of my energy and concern has gone into trying to come to grips with some of the real educaUonal issues avalanching upon us, especially in higher education. That meant trying to comprehend some of the social and cultural realities and forces which contribute to the tensions and confusion we feel. At the same time, it meant struggling to articulate and spell out - to work out and think, as clearly as possible - some concrete educational goals toward which to act. It meant, then, freeing myself from my »dogmatic slumbers« - i. e. changing the »sleeping« intentions and beliefs which had pervaded my educational behavior - in order to create or find new, more successful educational goals and to actively work to bring them into being. In the process, not only did I discover that practke calls up theory and theory leads to action, but I did not (and could not, it now seems to me) do any of this alone. The changes in me - philosophical, practical, moral - were worked-through in dialogue »with« others who shared (»rightly« or »wrongly«, »truly« or »falsely«) the same struggle to come to terms with the difficult educational issues we face.
