Some Remarks on Connotations (on the Example of Selected Hungarian Expressions)

Summary/Abstract: The paper presents selected methodological problems concerning the interpretation of connotation and its use when defining meanings of culture-bound words and expressions in the future „Dictionary of Political and Social Concepts of the Central and Eastern European Countries”. The first use of the term connotation usually is attributed to J. S. Mill, whereas the interpretation of connotation has much older tradition than it is assumed. It comes down from the medieval speculative grammar, in particular from the idea of modi significandi. Throughout the review of different approaches in the twentieth-century literature one can observe the emergence of logical, psychological and linguistic trends in the interpretation of connotation. The paper ends in analysis of selected expressions from Hungarian newspapers and their connotations which are necessary for comprehension of the texts.
