Summary/Abstract: The article is an analysis of the musical vocabulary found in the popular {Illustrated Dictionary of Polish} edited by Michał Arct in 1916. Among ca. 70,000 entries in Artct’s dictionary, there are 700 associated with music. The vast majority of these are terms commonly used in the time when the dictionary was published. Only a small amount of the terms can be perceived as too specialist, e.g. {rybałdja} (the study of psalm singing). Some of the terms are seen today as archaisms, also artifact archaisms e.g.: {trąbnik} (a trumpet maker). Still other terms have undergone formal alterations and are in current use, cf. {trąbiciel} (today {trębacz} - trumpeter), {fagocysta} (today {fagocista} - bassoonist). Apart from specific musical terms, the {Illustrated Dictionary} records those words connected with music which are of archaic character, e.g.: {gędzić} stpl. ‘brzdąkać, rzępolić, przygrywać’ (to saw away, to strum away).
