Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the problem of changes in modern Polish language against both conspicuous domination of oral form and influence of icon-dominated communication. This article refers to J. W. Ong’s opposition of orality / literacy understood as two cognitive modes, two modes of thinking, two modes of coding and decoding of speech. Both tendencies preserve concrete thinking. The style of thinking is reflected in the word-understanding process, influencing the relation: language-cognizance-tradition. The word-understanding process is shown as one of the symptoms of the beginning of the generation gap.
