The Origins of the "Spanish Synagogue" of Prague

Summary/Abstract: One winter day in 1959, an excited team from the Prague Jewish Museum entered the former ’’Israelite Temple of Prague,” which had just been turned over to the museum by the Ministry of Health. The new caretakers had only seen the synagogue from the outside. It is a measure of the tragedy of Prague Jewry that no ex-member of the Temple, no family memories had remained from the once flourishing community, to prepare the visitors for what they were to see as they turned the key to the desolate building. They switched on a light inside and "lived a surprise."
