Accentuation in dictionaries of computer terms

Summary/Abstract: The attention is drawn to an urgent problem - accentuation (or not) in dictionaries of terms. Recently more and more dictionaries with stresses put on are being published, but not in all dictionaries stresses are put on following the codified norms of standart language. The errors of accentuation in the Lithuanian “Encyclopedic dictionary of computer terms” (2005) and in “School explanatory dictionary of information technologies” (2003) are analyzed in the article. In these publications there are wrong ways of putting stresses not only on participles (ordinary and pronominal), but also on some adjectives and nouns, furthermore some words are left unstressed. The conclusion is drawn that such a way of accentuation belittles the value of important and very necessary dictionaries and makes harm to the culture of spoken language for specific purposes (LSP). Stresses in dictionaries of terms should be put on by experienced and skillful linguists and others should lean on normative literature and apply to accentologists. In order to improve the culture of spoken language for specific purposes it is necessary to achieve that all the terms would have stresses put on correctly not only in textbooks but also in dictionaries.
