Summary/Abstract: Nowadays it is discussed about the significance and sense of qualitative reading in a person’s life more and more often. The concern is that computer attracts children’s attention more than a book. This is quite a topical problem, because qualitative reading (that is, adequate acceptance and comprehension of information, ability to render it and reflect on it) is one of the elements of metacognitive thinking. During the process of active reading a child constructs meanings, realizes the significance and sense of reading. Active reading develops essential person’s metacognitive abilities, which ensure qualitative life in constantly changing society. Active reading can help primary school children to develop communicative competence. The content of a read text is the object, which can be discussed by pupils. They can share their experience about it, think it over, evaluate and interpret the events, characters, circumstances, background and etc. of the text.
