Summary/Abstract: The text is a portrait of Shamil Bassajev, a controversial figure of the recent Tchetchnian history, marked by violence and atrocities. A self-educated man, Bassajev is the grey eminence who planned and carried out several bloody terrorist attacks in Russia, thus acquiring both an embarrassing reputation among his co-nationals and a heroic aura among the Tchetchnian youth.
