Summary/Abstract: The introduction to the thematic bloc on synthesis of gender and mainstream literary theories discusses texts by Peter Schwenger, Patrocinio Schweickart, Susan Lanser and Susan Stanford Friedman. These texts point to the new insights, problems and transformations caused by introduction of gender into some of the contemporary literary theories. The essay also discusses the recognition of the importance of gender in wider theoretical analysis.
