Summary/Abstract: This analytical scrutiny aims at dealing with the tragic at the point where it meets literature. I have not undertaken this scrutiny with the desire to contradict George Steiner’s thesis, but in order to enlarge the area of the artistic representation of the tragic. The novel, as the great oppo-nent of theatre art, seems to be the space of artistic display where the tragic is expressed more strongly than in other types of creative writing. In ‘Things Fall Apart’, Chinua Achebe’s novel, the tragic can be detected using the theories of Aristotle, Hegel or Albert Camus. On the other hand, Toni Morrison’s novel, ‘Beloved’, is a tragic story that draws its sap from socially-oriented roots.
