Summary/Abstract: Offering a surprising revaluation of the Romanian Revolution of December 1989, the author argues that, ironically, it followed a Marxist “script”. The socialist regime itself created the social class composed of discontent urban workers and young intellectuals which overthrew it. Furthermore, the actually existing socialism has been, in fact, the hypercapitalism of the state, characterised by primitive accumulation based on agricultural expropriation, the extreme concentration of capital and the disharmony between production and consumption. As such, it was subject to Marxist laws, also meaning that its demise leaves open the possibility of an authentic socialism.
