Summary/Abstract: In the last years of the 19th century the establishing of a women’s magazine in Slovakia was rather demanded by Slovak women’s intellectuals. Though, the official authorities did not incline to this idea. The origin of Dennica, the first women’s magazine in Slovakia, came true only thanks to cooperating Slovak and Czech women (from the magazine Ženský svět) and men (from the magazine Dom a škola). The author analyses the conflicting views on the magazine in the Slovak intellectual environment, also the different views on the women’s emancipation among the magazine’s editors themselves. The author argues Dennica was one of the progressive elements in the Slovak public life at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
