Summary/Abstract: Up to the second half of the 19th century the association life was the domain of men in Slovakia. The rise of the bourgeoisie supported women’s participation in the public life. The author analyses the growing number of women’s associations: Beseda dievčenská , Dobročinnný ženský spolok, Ženský spolok Izabela, Živena, Ženská národná rada and the restrictions put on associating activities during the World War II.
