Russia and the Danube Principalities in the 1820-ies

Summary/Abstract: Presents the situation of the two Danube Principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia in the 1820-ies as part of the "Oriental Question", a cluster of issues surrounding the declin of the Ottoman Empire. Starting with the greek revolt of 1821, the Romanian Principalities became one of the key interest spheres in the competition between the Ottoman and the Russian Empire for domination on the Balkan peninsula. The evolution in Wallachia and Moldavia had also influences on Transylvania and the Habsburg Empire. The russian implication in this region is seen primarily as based on political and ideological motives, whereas economic interests were of lesser importance.
