The Work of the Philomaths’ Union in Vilnius University and Nowadays

Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the Philomath Union at Vilnius University, which was active nearly two hundred years ago. Political and social situation in Lithuania and Europe of that time is discussed. The reasons why the Union functioned for such a short period are highlighted. The main ideas of the Philomaths’ activities, the analysis of the main philosophy and works relevant to these days are presented in the paper. The Philomaths’ socio-economic programmes and socio-economic issues of contemporary Lithuania are linked. Finally, the article proves that the Philomaths’ Union initiated collection of statistical information and its analysis in Lithuania.
