Summary/Abstract: The paper will discuss Seamus Heaney's ars poetica in connection to the tension between poetic identity and Irish identity constantly present in his poetic creation. It will also attempt to examine various aspects of his poetry in the context of contemporary Ireland, taking into account the Irish tradition of the poet as a public figure - and audience's expectations - and Heaney's sense of being a poet in the first place, his creed being the mystery of the poet’s art
