Summary/Abstract: Abstract. In the course of the internationally monitored negotiations over the status of Kosovo, Greece has maintained a position pleading for persistence and calmness, rather than hastiness and pressure. Following Kosovo’s unilateral declaration of independence, Greece has refrained from recognizing the new state, yet at the same time adopted a pragmatic stance towards its new neighbour. More than by the Kosovo issue, its policy is informed by the wish to maintain stability in the wider region, which it sees threatened by the Kosovar declaration of independence, by its traditional allegiance with Serbia, and by its focus on the naming of the Macedonian State. In a two pronged diplomatic effort, Greece hopes to resolve the conflicts over Macedonia and Kosovo in a manner most favourable to the Greek position.
