Summary/Abstract: They crossed the road between the trucks easily. The crossing was not difficult, nor were they afraid of the guns since they were used to much harder crossings, over fortified railroad tracks watched over by shrewd German guards in nights both dark and luminous. And tonight it was just right, neither too dark nor too light. They were almost sorry to abandon the camp once they were in it. Around them lie riches, belonging to almost nobody. Food, arms, ammunition, clothes, shoes . . . the solid kind made for soldiers, made to last. But they had not planned beforehand. They were not ready. Barebottom hesitated a moment, whether to sneak over to one of the tents and pinch one of those knapsacks containing tihe common soldier's bread, or perhaps somebody's trousers. But he only shoved his arm into a truck they were passing, touching the heavy iron-bound cases of ammunition, most probably for cannons.
