Summary/Abstract: The Roma (Gypsies) remain to date the most deprived ethnic group of Europe. Almost everywhere, their fundamental civil rights are threatened. Disturbing cases of racist violence targeting Roma have occurred in recent years. Discrimination against Roma in employment, education, health care, administrative and other services is common in many societies. Hate speech against Roma deepens the negative stereotypes which pervade European public opinion. The European Roma Rights Center is an international public interest law organisation which monitors the human rights situation of Roma and provides legal defence in cases of human rights abuse.
