A Negative Opinion on Dialectical Materialism

Summary/Abstract: The article dwells on the problem of the evaluation of dialectical materialism as a philosophical doctrine. An attempt is made to justify the idea that some postulates of dialectical materialism are totally ungrounded. The laws of dialectics are vague, they are subject to indiscriminate interpretation and lack empirical content. The thesis of the simultaneous absoluteness and relativity of truth is the result of a misunderstanding caused by the uncritical attitude towards Lenin’s legacy whereas the interpretation of the concept of truth by the concept of reflection only compounds the problem. Dialectical materialism is a form of essentialism. The thesis that practice is the criterion of truth is beneath criticism as is empiricism which is a characteristic of the theory of knowledge of dialectical materialism.
