Summary/Abstract: This article attempts to reconstruct the implied author of Tadeusz Różewicz’s Kartoteka (The Card Index) on the basis of the stage directions and their interaction with the dialogue. It can be noticed that the instructions transmitted to the reader in italics are at times absurd, contradictory or unperformable (undoable). The implied author may not have any spoken lines but he is present in the script, entering into a kind of dialogue with the director and with contemporary theatre practice. The article examines the implications this has for productions of the play that wish to convey this aspect to an audience that does not have ready access to the text.
