Summary/Abstract: In the mixed-member electoral system, a voter casts two votes: one for a candidate in a single-member constituency, and one for party-list proportional representation. The author discusses the reasons for adopting the mixed-member electoral system in selected countries, political outcomes of such decisions, as well as reasons for abandoning this system. The main focus of this analysis is on the mixed-member electoral systems adopted in Italy and Russia. Consideration of the mixed-member electoral system is necessary particularly in Poland, as it is frequently being advocated to employ in Polish parliamentary elections.
