Summary/Abstract: One of the causes of voter absenteeism is organizational and technical barriers which prevent citizens from voting. Many voters are facing difficulties in reaching the polling station (e.g., the elderly, disabled, or those travelling/abroad). The principle of equality in elections requires authorities to implement legal mechanisms that would eliminate such barriers, enabling as many eligible citizens as possible to vote. Alternative voting methods are discussed as a viable means to increase voter access. This article begins by introducing various alternative voting methods employed in the EU member states (postal voting, proxy voting, e-voting, and mobile polling station). Next, the paper provides an overview of Polish implementation of these methods over the last 20 years. The article concludes with a brief comparison of the mechanisms adopted in Poland versus other EU member states.
