Summary/Abstract: The concept of think tanks over time became an important link in the process of security and foreign policy development in the USA. There are conflicting opinions with regard to their importance and influence, starting from those who emphasize the importance of think tanks’ independent thinking in decisionmaking processes, all the way to those who see these institutions as merely providing intellectual support to the ruling elites and interest groups. Although think tanks’ credibility rests on their ability to promote unbiased and critical thinking, these institutions nonetheless usually have a clearly defined orientation both in terms of values and ideology when it comes to fundamental issues regarding the development of American society and the role of the state.
