Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the research focused on changes in the European regional space regarding Output innovation based on the following dynamics indicators: workers in high and mid-tech industry (as % of workforce), patents registered in the European Patent Office (EPO) per 1 million of workforce and the share of workforce in high and mid-tech industry in the overall number of workers employed in industry sector. The regions of EU countries at NUTS 2 level were analyzed with regard to the dynamics of Output innovation characteristics values in two periods: 1999-2003 and 2004-2008. The research was performed in groups considering EU global space, i.e., 265 NUTS 2 level regions for which data was available: “old” EU regions (209), EU 12 regions – 56 regions of the recent two accessions, EU 27(C) regions – including capitals and EU capital regions, EU 15(C) regions – including capitals and capital regions of EU 15 – 16 regions, EU 12(C) regions – including capitals and capital regions of EU 10+2 – 12 regions, Polish regions (16 regions). Additionally, EU regional space was divided into four classes illustrating the position of regions with regard to transformations intensity in the dynamics of profiles accepted for the study.
