Summary/Abstract: Creative industries are characterized by a rate of development faster than other industries. Their products have higher possibilities to compete on the global market under the low salary pressure conditions from less developed countries. The article presents the results of the questionnaire research done among 207 firms belonging to 13 categories of creative industries, which operates in Lesser Poland (Małopolska). The most important determinants of their competitiveness are increase in the creativity level, establishment of relations with other firms and employment of high quality specialists. The potential of usage design in development of firms competitiveness is not enough recognised. To the greatest extent, the role of design is recognised in firms belonging to the sector of fashion and architecture. The most popular sphere of design implementation is multimedia.
