Summary/Abstract: Historian and political scientist Ilios Yannakakis was born in 1931 in Cairo. In 1949 he came to Czechoslovakia, where he was employed as a tutor and secondar y school teacher. He later worked as a university lecturer. In 1968, he emigrated to France, where he worked as professor of histor y and international relations at the University of Lille and specialized in the histor y of communism and events in the Eastern Bloc. The New Presence spoke to him about his eventful life and his exploration of the ramifications of totalitarian regimes, from Czechoslovakia to Iraq.
