Summary/Abstract: While Eastern Europe languishes, the Visegrád countries of Central Europe seem to be thriving in comparison, especially those who have just joined the EU. Slovakia, in particular, is even being hailed as the new "tiger economy" of Europe. This is particularly encouraging as it is less than a decade since the country turned its back on the authoritar¬ian populist government of Vladimír Mečiar, which left it lagging behind its Visegrád neighbors. In our section on the emergence of Slovakia, political scientist Grigorij Mesežnikov looks at this country's burgeoning success and at the threats that might still hinder its progress.
