Summary/Abstract: During the nineteenth century, the implications of evolutionary theories became apparent, especially the social and biological assumptions of Darwin’s hypotheses and their extension to the relations between men and women. In Outlying Islands, David Greig makes use of this theory by subverting the image of female weakness in the natural environment of a remote Scottish island. The author’s deconstruction is mainly based in the false expectations he creates around Ellen’s innocence and male dominance while the truth discovered at the end shows a radical difference.
