Summary/Abstract: In this paper, I want to point out the certain problematic tendencies of recent Bosnian and Herzegovinian and regional historiography: starting from excessive criticism of the theory about Bogumil nature of Bosnian Church, it ultimately decreases to an absolute minimum its role and the role of Medieval Bosnian state in the emergence of stećak (tombstone) art. The root of the problem is in the historiographical methodology, which traditionally does not attach the importance to examples of visual culture. As a result of this approach, insisting on orthodoxy of Bosnian Church leads to unjustified, aprioristic closure of other possibilities to interpret the iconography of stećak. The unique phenomenon of stećak, characteristic for the region of Medieval Bosnia and its border areas, violently attempts to place in context of Western European, Romanesque and Gothic sepulchral art, although in the iconography of stećak there is a little evidence for such classification. On the scene is typical Eurocentric, ideological conception that in so-called small or marginal cultures such as Medieval Bosnia, sees only a reflection or a pale copy of the spiritual flows generated in the western centres of political power.
