Summary/Abstract: The translation of T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land signed by Ion Pillat introduced the Anglo-American modernist poet to the Romanian readership. Pillat's version is a successful example of intercultural mediation. It displays a constant concern with maintaining a balance between the foreignness of the source text and the expectations of the target readers with respect to a poem belonging to the Anglo-American space. Whereas most of the translation techniques used by Pillat reveal a preference for fluent translations, his selection of the author/poem to render into Romanian witnesses his desire to enrich the literary experiences of the Romanian readers.
